Combi-wall construction pits for Blankenburgtunnel

Accessibility to the city of Rotterdam and its wider region is of crucial importance to the economy. Alongside the largest port in Europe, the Rotterdam region also hosts an enormous horticultural cluster - Greenport West Holland. Thus, the construction of the Blankenburg Connection is necessary to allow for continued accessibility and to stimulate economic growth in the area.

Various studies have identified a number of urgent traffic congestions which will arise in the Rotterdam area from 2020 onward. This traffic comes at the expense of the liveability and economic activity in the region, with, for example, more traffic jams in the Benelux tunnel area. The Blankenburg Connection will relieve this problem by offering motorists an alternative to ‘crossing’ the Scheur/Nieuwe Waterweg.

One of the main tasks for the construction of this tunnel was to construct dredging pits for concrete slabs and installing gravel beds. These dredging pits were constructed using combi-walls. The tubes and sheet piles for these walls were placed using several different types of Dieseko Group equipment. Namely:

  • PVE 110M with 1000 power pack
  • PVE 2335VM with 1000 power pack
  • PVE 70VM with 1600 power pack
  • Woltman 1000PDS
  • Woltman 3000PDS

To significantly increase the speed at which the combi walls were set, work was done from several pontoons with several vibratory hammers. The casings are then set by one vibratory hammer, and the sheet piles are inserted between those by a second one.
