Work started at Harlingen – Willemshaven

On 22 January, Zoning plan Harlingen - Willemshaven was adopted by Harlingen City Council.

The reason

Willemshaven has been used as a storage and transhipment port since the late nineteenth century. In recent years, this function has been increasingly in decline. Due to its location in the port of Harlingen, the area has great potential to be developed into an attractive area with tourist, recreational and nautical functions. One of the main spearheads of the municipality of Harlingen is to increase the tourist-recreational offer in the municipality and to make Willemshaven an attractive area again.

Intended programme

Besides the buildings on Willemshaven, the marina and the cruise terminal are also important elements in the new situation. The new situation assumes the following developments:

  • a marina of 225 berths;
  • a 160-metre floating jetty for cruise ships (with a 180-metre jetty);
  • 9,500 m2 of tourist-recreational facilities;
  • 2,000 m2 of approachable catering/restaurants;
  • 2,000 m2 of office;
  • 500 m2 of retail;
  • use of public space for parking and events.
